Abuse or improper prescribing of antibiotics and narcotics and other addiction- prone medications has fostered an epidemic of chemical dependency and resistant bacteria. Recently, the Center for Disease Control issued a pamphlet to physicians asking them to reconsider their liberal antibiotic prescribing practices, as most infections are either viral or self-limiting. Similarly, the NYS Department of Health is monitoring and urging practitioners to limit the use of addition-prone medications including narcotics, benzodiazepines and other “controlled” substances. We agree with these efforts.
Patients coming to our practice must understand that we do not indiscriminately use antibiotics ( and especially not by phone without examining the patient). In addition, narcotics or other addiction-prone medications, such as benzodiazepines are only used short term and for specific reasons. Any long term use of these classes of medications need to be under the supervision of a psychiatrist or pain management specialist.
